Chronic Middle Ear Disease

Our Ear and Hearing Center is the largest center in the Nordic region.

Our center receives around 60,000 patient visits annually, and we are the largest ear and hearing center in the Nordic region and, as such, we manage several large clinical trials.

Common symptoms of middle ear disease include hearing loss, fluid draining from the ear, pain or pressure in the ear, or frequent ear infections. The number of symptoms experienced varies from patient to patient and can also occur irregularly.

Patients coming to the Karolinska Ear and Hearing Center often start with a hearing examination, balance examination, or radiology before meeting their doctor. Most patients experience these examinations as comfortable and painless.

When surgery is the preferred treatment, our experienced team performs a variety of surgical procedures:

  • Eardrum repair
  • Basic and advanced middle ear and mastoid reconstructive surgery
  • Laser surgery to treat otosclerosis
  • Hearing implants, including cochlear implants, middle ear implants, and bone conduction hearing solutions
  • Skull base surgery
  • Correction of malformed outer and middle ear (congenital malformations)
  • Middle ear tumor surgery and treatment

If surgery is not recommended, treatment can be conservative or include hearing aids
