Strabismus surgery

St. Erik Eye Hospital has the largest clinic in the Nordic region for patients of all ages with strabismus and eye movement problems.

Sometimes a squint may require a procedure to straighten the eyes, a so-called strabismus surgery. To make a squinting eye straighter, we strengthen certain eye muscles and weaken others. Each eye has six extrinsic muscles that attach to the eyeball itself, and each muscle should move the eye in a certain way. We decide which eye is to be operated on during a preliminary examination. In most cases, we operate on the squinting eye, but there are exceptions.

St. Erik Eye Hospital has the largest clinic in the Nordic region for patients of all ages with strabismus and eye movement problems. We also offer a comprehensive medical contact lens service for infants and young children.

The surgery is most often performed under general anesthesia, but in some cases, under local anesthesia. The patient can usually leave the hospital on the same day.

After the procedure, the patient may experience double vision, a rubbing sensation, red eyes, or increased tear flow. These side effects usually pass after a while. The stitches sewed during the surgery fall out by themselves.
Strabismus surgery does not affect visual acuity, and the potential need for glasses remains, but adults who wear prism glasses may need to adjust the prisms.
