Pediatric Liver, Biliary, and Pancreas Disease

We care for patients from all over Sweden and receive children from other countries for diagnostics and treatment of the hepatobiliary and pancreatic systems. Liver and pancreas diseases in children are rare, so it is essential to centralize the knowledge to a few healthcare providers in order to give the best possible care and to build clinical experience.

Our department for pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition receives patients from all over Sweden. In most cases, we handle the diagnostic process and meet the patients for yearly checkups. The regular follow-ups are made by the patient’s local healthcare provider in cooperation with our unit. By collaborating with other local hospitals, we are able to care for a large number of patients. We also receive children from other countries for diagnostics and treatment of the hepatobiliary and pancreatic systems.

Some of the liver, biliary and pancreas conditions we diagnose and treat are:

  • Neonatal cholestasis
  • Metabolic liver disease
  • Inflammatory/autoimmune liver, biliary and pancreatic disease
  • Acute and chronic liver failure
  • Vascular liver diseases – congenital vascular defects, including shunting of blood, and also thrombotic vascular diseases
  • Acute and chronic pancreatitis with pancreatic insufficiency

While liver diseases are rare in children, some liver, biliary, and pancreas diseases are congenital, and some present later in life. These diseases can be difficult to diagnose and can often be acute. Severe jaundice, for example, must be detected and treated quickly, otherwise, it can lead to life-threatening consequences.

Since liver, biliary, and pancreas diseases are uncommon, it is essential to centralize the knowledge to a few healthcare providers in order to give the best possible care.

We work closely with pediatric surgery, transplantation center, and adult hepatology, as well as the departments of pathology, radiology, and the Genomic Medicine Center Karolinska.

The Astrid Lindgren Children’s Hospital is a part of Karolinska University Hospital, with facilities in several locations in Stockholm.
