MyeloMeningoCele – Spina Bifida

Children with MMC have weaknesses and lack of sensation of different severity ranging from only in the feet to affecting legs up to thorax.

MyeloMeningoCele (MMC) is a malformation and lack of closure of the spinal cord. In the first days of life, the myelomeningocele on the back is closed by the neurosurgeon. Sometimes there is a need for a shunt for the cerebrospinal fluid because of hydrocephalus.

Children with MMC have weaknesses and lack of sensation of different severity ranging from only in the feet to affecting legs up to thorax.

At Karolinska we have a MMC team consisting of pediatric neurologist, neurosurgeon, pediatric orthopaedic surgeon, physiotherapist, orthotist and urotherapists.

Pediatric surgeons are also part of the treatment team. Concern is made for most of the children to walk with orthoses, which is attained by analysis at the Gait Lab and by orthopaedic surgery keeping the hips contained in their sockets and keeping knees straight and feet plantigrade.
