For the seventh consecutive year, Karolinska University Hospital ranks among the world’s 10 best hospitals. In this year’s edition, Karolinska is named the top hospital in Europe and the fourth best in the world. This marks the third time the hospital has secured the number one position in Europe. The ranking is published annually by Newsweek.

“This is, above all, a recognition of the world-leading healthcare, research, and education delivered by all our employees – together. Always in close collaboration with our partners, often Karolinska Institutet,” says Christophe Pedroletti, CEO of Karolinska University Hospital.

The ranking is based on a comprehensive evaluation of hospital performance, combining quality metrics, peer recommendations, patient experience data, and the implementation of patient-reported outcome measures.

“Ultimately, it is in the interaction with each patient that Karolinska University Hospital’s true strength lies, and that explains why we continue to perform strongly year after year,” Pedroletti adds.

The ranking is based on four main sources:

  • Hospital quality metrics: Publicly available data on care quality, hygiene, and staffing levels.
  • Peer recommendations: Thousands of medical experts, including doctors and hospital managers, were surveyed to recommend top hospitals in their own and other countries.
  • Patient experience: Surveys capturing patient satisfaction, care quality, and willingness to recommend the hospital.
  • PROMs implementation: Assessment of hospitals’ use of patient-reported outcome measures to evaluate treatment impact and quality of life.

This year’s evaluation included more than 2,500 hospitals across 32 countries.

Karolinska University Hospital’s rankings over the years:

  • 2026: No. 4 – Best in Europe
  • 2025: No. 5 – Best in Europe
  • 2024: No. 7
  • 2023: No. 6 – Best in Europe
  • 2022: No. 8
  • 2021: No. 7
