International Fellowship in Clinical Gastroenterology

The Centre for Digestive Health is recognized for the management of complex gastrointestinal conditions. Our IBD unit cares for approximately 5,000 IBD patients and provides a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach with advanced therapies and imaging.

What we offer

Our Intestinal Failure unit serves as a national reference centre, and we host one of only two IBUS-certified intestinal ultrasound training centres in Sweden.  Neurogastroenterology patients are primarily managed at the South Campus, which hosts the GastroLab, dedicated to the assessment of gastrointestinal function and physiology.

Close integration with Karolinska Institutet provides a strong research environment for translational and registry-based studies. Karolinska University Hospital is ranked #5 worldwide and #1 in Europe in Newsweek’s 2025 World’s Best Hospitals list.

The fellowship offers four specialized tracks:

  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
  • Intestinal Ultrasound (IUS) and capsule endoscopy
  • Intestinal Failure
  • Neurogastroenterology (including ph-metry and manometry)

The program can be adapted to the fellows specific areas of interest. The aim is that each fellow completes the fellowship with advanced competence in managing complex patients using specialized diagnostic and therapeutic tools.

Key responsibilities

Clinical training takes place in multidisciplinary teams and includes structured education within the chosen track. Fellows progress from observation to supervised, increasingly independent practice, participating in ward rounds, outpatient clinics, and multidisciplinary conferences alongside specialists such as surgeons, dietitians, and clinical pharmacologists.

For fellows in the IUS track, training includes intensive hands-on experience with
standardized intestinal ultrasound integrated into clinical care.

Fellows are encouraged to engage in research projects aligned with their clinical interests, including translational studies, functional evaluations, or registry-based data analyses. Fellows also participate in seminars, journal clubs, and research meetings.

Teaching is integrated, offering opportunities to contribute to the training of medical students and residents.
