A Smarter Path to Digital and Preventive Healthcare
Sweden’s healthcare system is facing critical challenges. As the population ages and chronic diseases become more common, the need for sustainable healthcare solutions is greater than ever. Current reimbursement models often prioritize physical visits and acute care—leaving limited room for digital health services and preventive care.
To meet this need, Karolinska University Hospital is leading a new initiative in collaboration with the European Commission and the World Health Organization (WHO). Supported by the Technical Support Instrument (TSI), this two-year project focuses on developing sustainable reimbursement models for digital healthcare and preventive health services in Sweden.
The project will map current healthcare financing structures, identify barriers to scaling digital health solutions, and explore new approaches that support patient-centered care, remote services, and hospital@home programs.
By working with stakeholders across regional and national levels, the project aims to strengthen Sweden’s healthcare system and serve as a model for other countries looking to advance digital transformation in healthcare.
