Hemophilia

The multidisciplinary team at our certified hemophilia center provides personalized treatment through the different stages of life.

Hemophilia is an inherited bleeding disorder that impairs blood clotting due to missing or reduced levels of coagulation factor VIII (hemophilia A) or IX (hemophilia B). The disorder is X-linked and mainly affects men. Hemophilia is divided into severe, moderate, or mild forms depending on the levels of the deficient coagulation factor.

Patients with mild hemophilia may develop severe bleeding symptoms in case of trauma, surgery, or dental extractions. In the more severe forms, bleeding can occur spontaneously or after minor trauma, especially in the skin (bruising), mucous membranes (such as an oral cavity, nose bleeds), muscles, and joints. Abdominal trauma and head trauma can lead to life-threatening bleeding.

Our hemophilia center is a certified European Hemophilia Comprehensive Care Center (EHCCC), specializing in diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care in children and adults with hemophilia. We are a tertiary referral center and the largest hemophilia center in Sweden. The multidisciplinary team involves physicians, pediatricians, specialist hemophilia nurses, physiotherapists, social workers, psychologists, gynecologists, orthopedic surgeons, and orthopedic technicians. Diagnostics and monitoring are performed in close collaboration with the Special Coagulation Laboratory. We are involved in clinical trials, academic studies, the Swedish Hemophilia registry, and the Pediatric Network on Hemophilia Management (PedNet).

Sweden has been a pioneer in hemophilia treatment, and prophylactic home treatment with factor concentrates has been provided since the 1970s. High dose-prophylaxis is the standard of care, and long-acting factor concentrates have been used frequently in recent years. New non-factor replacement therapies are provided to selected patients, often within clinical trials. The prophylactic treatment is tailored according to the patient’s coagulation factor levels, individual pharmacokinetic profile, bleeding phenotype, and life situation. Preparation for gene therapy is ongoing, making us ready to offer it as a treatment when it is approved nationally. We already have facilities to offer gene therapy within clinical studies.
