Tarsal Coalition

Limit of motion and frequent ankle sprain.

Children with tarsal coalition develop an abnormal connection between the bones in the midsection and back of the foot. Typically pain from the problem doesn´t develop until your child is older, as the “bridge” between the bones hardens and it begins to limit the motion.

The symtptoms of Tarsal coalitions are limit of motion, pain when walking on an uneven surface and frequent ankle sprains.

The diagnostics for Tarsal coalitions are made with X-ray, CT-scan or MRI

Initial treatment is non-operative (rest or immobilize the foot), insoles.

Children with ongoing pain may need an operative treatment with removal of the coalition tissue.
